Five Tips for Writing Reader Responsive Articles

Friday, June 18th, 2010

Write website articles designed to inform and gain reader confidence, and motivate them to take the specific action you ask of them.

Communication is the life blood of Internet Marketing.  The written articles you post will be the principal conduit you will use to provide readers with content rich facts and information.  Well written articles remain the backbone of Internet web pages. Videos are available, and useful at times to demonstrate or illustrate processes, but written articles continue to be the Internet standard.

Articles should be well written–including paying attention to spelling and grammar as best you can.  Articles need to be filled with simple, factual, concise and VERY interesting information.  Write a boring article and your reader will be gone before the end of the first paragraph.  Grab reader’s attention up front.  Tell them what they can expect from your article.  Use bullet points as a simple direct means of letting them know the subject matter you will cover in your article.

Here are five specific areas to consider when writing your web articles:

  1. Know your subject
  2. Oranize your message -  use an outline
  3. Focus your article on your reader – write what they need to know
  4. Be down to earth – be simple
  5. Conclude with a defined request for them to take action

Know your subject - This may sound silly.  The question you have to ask yourself is, “Do I know the subject well enough to write about it?”  If the answer is no, then the first thing you’ll need to do is some research.  You need to learn enough to factually and logically write about your subject.  Remember, readers have come to your article to learn something they didn’t know.  They are looking for answers to help them solve their questions and needs.  Be honest with them.  Tell them what you know in the best way you know how.

Organize your message – use an outline to help you – Your articles should logically walk a reader through the information you want to present to them.  A good outline will start with an interest grabbing headline, and work from there.   The benefit of an outline (hand written) is as a guide for you.  Outlines will help keep you on track.  The outline should follow a path that takes your reader from the simple to the complex, or from the beginning to the end.  You don’t want to wander and hope they understand what you are telling them. Detours turn readers off.  Follow your outline religiously.  When you’ve finished your first draft, read the article and see if it makes sense to you.  You may want to have a couple other people read to see if they easily understand the information your are presenting.

Focus your article on the reader – write about what they need to know- The objective of your content rich article is to provide readers with helpful information.  They are seeking answers to quesions, needs or concerns they have.  Each article must be written with your reader in mind.  Don’t try to dazzle them with fancy foot work.  Give them concrete information they will value.  Give them value, and they are likely to return for more.  Put yourself in their shoes.  Write your article as if their need was your own.  Don’t assume they know what you know . . . because they don’t or they wouldn’t be coming to your website for answers.

Be down to earth – be simple – Make your readers feel at ease.  Write your articles as much as possible just like your would talk to them if they were present.  Don’t be overly chatty, but be simple and present your knowledge and facts in a low key manner.  You’re not trying to show them you know more than they do.  They assume that fact when they come to your site to read what you have to offer.

Conclude with a defined call to action – Should one of the purposes of your website be to market a solution to visitors, then conclude your article with a request for them to order what you are offering as a solution.  If you have presented your article’s information in a simple, logical and helpful way, you will find more buyers of your solution.  If the article is for information purposes only, encourage them to “try out” your solution.  Direct them to read other articles you’ve written that may be of help or interest on the same subject matter, and provide a link to these articles.

Writing Effective Website Articles

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

Here are some simple guidelines for writing effective website articles.

These simple guidelines should help you in writing articles for your website that will be succinct and useful to your readers.  Individuals who come to your website are looking for answers to needs and questions they have.  They want to gain that information as quickly and completely as possible.  Following these simple guidelines will provide these visitors to your site with foundation building information–just what they were seeking.

  • Be Original
  • Follow a Specific Format
  • Be Brief but Factual
  • Articles Length of 300 – 1000 Words/3 – 5 Paragraphs
  • Focus on Central Facts and Information

Be OriginalFirst and foremost you want your articles to be original–your own words on the topic you are writing about.  DON’T PLAGIARIZE! Your information may be similar to others.  You don’t have a lock every bit of information.  Just tell your readers what you know.

Follow a Specific FormatUsing a set format for the layout or structure of your articles will make reading your valuable information easier.  Use bold headers to emphasize key points or facts.  Simple outlines can give essential elements you wish to convey without the writing endless verbiage.  Write what is needed to make your point.

Be Brief but FactualReaders are looking for answers that solve their particular need.  Give them what they need as succinct as is reasonable to put across your point.  Say what you want and need to say.  If you need to expand or your thoughts to cover the subject adequately then do so.  You don’t need to embellish or add fluff to gain credibility with readers.  Truthful and helpful information simply stated works best.

Articles Length of 300 – 1000 Words/3 – 5 ParagraphsMost articles should be no longer in length than 300 to 1000 words in length.  Content should be presented in no more than 3 to 5 paragraphs.  Articles longer in length that these parameters give rise to considering breaking the topic information into more than one article.  Even in this article each of the guidelines presented could be expanded to individual articles.  When you do find the need to expand to separate articles you can start with a base page (similar to this) and add individual pages with links from the base article to the specific element’s article, and be sure to refer or link them back to the base article.  Allowing readers to move about your website can increase your visibility–and thus your value to them.

Focus on Central Facts and Information - Stay on target.  Keep your writing focused on the prime subject you intended writing.  If you need to wander some, use the link to another page guideline noted above.  Keeping on target with your message will please your readers, as well as assist you in your SEO (Search Engine Optimization).

The suggested guidelines for writing effective website articles presented here are not hard and fast rules.  They can be broken, but breaking them should be the exception not the rule.  (This article has 7 paragraphs.)   Be Original, Follow a Specific Format, Be Brief but Factual, Articles Length of 300 – 1000 Words/3 – 5 Paragraphs and Focus on Central Facts and Information will allow you to write effective articles that will be read by visitors to your website, and be rewarded for having done so.  You will have provided them with information they were seeking.

E-mail List Building Fast and Easy

Monday, August 10th, 2009

Build E-Mail Lists Faster and Easier

Building an e-mail list is the real way to success for every online marketer.  In our article “What Are the Real Benefits of Having an Opt-in Mailing List,” we talk about the advantages to creating a mailing list for your website.  Your business will not grow as fast without one.

Because online marketing is a “numbers game,” it makes sense to pay attention to the means and ways to increase the traffic to your sites–more importantly, to the products you are selling or promoting.

You can build you list with an opt-in sign up form . . . most internet marketers do.  This is one of the simple ways to get your list going.  The major problem many web promoters and sellers have is getting traffic to their site.  We use tools such as Search Engine Optimization (SEO) to help us, and we should.

If you want to put your list building efforts on “steroids,” you need to have access to more than just your website to increase your opportunity to grow.  What would happen to your list building success if you had access to other successful web marketers who have contact with hundred or thousands of other prospects with a similar interest that you are promoting.  Would this be of value?  Exposure on a few of these sights could make your list building explode!

So, you ask, how do you get space on other’s websites that will help build your list?  The answer is easy ListCrew.com.   We highly recommend you take a look at this simple, yet dynamic way to increase your site’s exposure–thus your list building opportunity.  Go to ListCrew.com.  See what they offer, and why you need them.

Let them “pump you up!”

Keyword Research Tools

Saturday, August 8th, 2009

A Keyword Research Tool is a must.

Using a keyword research tool to help you optimize your search engine ranking is a must. The place where you show up on a web search can well determine how successful, or how profitable, your website is going to be–REGARDLESS OF WHAT YOU ARE PROMOTING.  Most every article or post you read concerning this important function will tell you that being ranked in the top 20 is crucial.  Because of this importance, you need to use any and every tool available to help you accomplish this important task.

Some of these tools are free.  Most of us like “free.”  Keep in mind what you get for free–usually a lead to something that cost you.  Be honest with yourself when you look only for the lost cost or no cost options, you most likely are not going to get the premium value available.  IF your need is rudimentary then a complimentary introduction is more than appropriate.  We always presume you “get what you pay for.”

Assuming your website(s) have value, we assume you want them to be as profitable as possible.  Profitable in the sense you have sufficient traffic coming to your site(s) to justify your efforts.  If your website is a “for profit” site–you are marketing something, you have affiliate associations linked to your site, etc., then you for sure want as much traffic directed to you as possible by the search engines.

There are several Keyword programs available ranging in price and functionality.  Here are three that can help you in your ranking efforts.  Your own evaluation is more important than ours–your need and use may be different than ours.  We have found these to be appropriate and helpful to us.  You should research and review these, and any others you wish to look into for your own benefit: WordTracker, Google AdWords and Nichebot.

One note of interest.  We have found there are several services available that incorporate the use of WordTracker and Google AdWords (and Analytics), including Nichebot.  This must have some relevance to the information they provide in this important web success process–you decide.

Web Standards Help with Long-term SEO Results

Sunday, August 2nd, 2009

Using Web Standards Will Provide Long-term SEO Benefits

With your Web marketing strategy developed,  and you are engaged in completing your SEO keyword research, now is the time to construct your articles using the targeted keyword phrases and keywords you have developed.  Assembling your new pages using standard structural HTML is fundamental.  If you have relied on a website maintenance service provider to take care of the architectural design, that’s okay, but you may be well served to look at your source code to be sure it conforms to standards.

Ensuring your website has been designed for maximum SEO optimization is very important.  Your review of your website’s source code is helpful to make certain your website is being reviewed by search engine spiders with ease.  You want them to rank you as high as possible, and using correct source code protocol is a must.

Standards based Structural HTML

You are looking to see that page header tags (<h1>,< h2>, etc.), list tags (<ol> and <li>) to name a couple have been properly wrapped with <> tag markings.  This shouldn’t be an daunting task, but an important one, nonetheless.  This structural mark-up can easily be overlooked, or purposely avoided.  Search engine spiders look for good structural HTML and reward web pages for using standards based HTML mark-up.

Cascading Style Sheets

Utilize Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) in the construction and architecture of your web page.  CSS helps create a clean and consistent looking website.  They help you manage and control the look and layout of your website.  There is great diversity in how you style you page–but we recommend you keep it fairly simple and clean.  Using a cascading style sheet helps you write structural HTML mark-up with no loss or compromising your website’s design, or you personal vision.  Because you are able to use appropriate coding and mark-up you provide your site with the best opportunity to receive maximum SEO results.

Benefits of Using Standard HTML Structural Mark-up and CSS

  1. Structured HTML mark-up should improve the search engine’s spiders in effectively and easily indexing your web page contents.
  2. Using both standard HTML structural mark-up and cascading style sheets (CSS)  can help reduce the size of your HTML files–allowing your web pages to be loaded quicker.
  3. HTML and CSS  components  used in place of images will allow you to use your keywords strategically–where they can count the most.  This is especially true with page headers.
  4. Your website should provide better accessibility.  This effort can enhance and increase access more users using more devices such as cell phones, PDA’s, etc.
  5. You will have greater ease and efficiency in maintaining your website.
  6. You will be able to make your web design more compatible with other devices such as cell phones, PDA’s, etc.

Search Engine Optimization is critical in the over all, and engaging in exploiting the use of web standards for the long haul will provide sought after rewards.  Ignoring this process could be detrimental to your success in the long run.  Take a little time up front to reap the rewards going forward.

Keyword Placement Primer

Strategic Keyword Placement Helps Optimize SEO

Ranking prominently in search engine results is the prime goal of every webmaster.  A top 20 ranking is coveted.   The appropriate placement of keywords is essential in this effort.  The placement of these important strategic words in the right places, and in the right amounts, is crucial to maximizing your search engine optimization.  Having searchers land on your pages will be assisted with the tactical placement of appropriate keywords and phrases.

Here are some helpful pointers to assist you in this important process:

Don’ts:

  • Don’t try to “beat the system.”  The search engines are perpetually changing.  They are constantly on the lookout for those trying to circumvent the process.  If they find you they will penalize you–not ranking you being one of them–which makes these efforts fruitless.

  • Don’t engage in spamming:

    • Overloading your pages with keywords.

    • Similarly, don’t use keywords repetitively.

    • Using keywords that are not relevant to your site.

Do’s:

Follow these simple guidelines, and you should be successful in your optimizing efforts:

  • First and foremost is having rich, topic specific, content in your pages. Once searchers find your page they need to be rewarded with value from appropriate well written articles.  Keywords and key phrases can always be embedded into an article at strategic and appropriate places.
  • Doing some keyword analysis or research before you post your articles is a must.   Ensure you have utilized the prime keywords in your page . . . otherwise you lose the benefit of trying to optimize your page from the start.
    • Creating a keyword list may come first, but the quality of the information in your article is crucial to your long term success.
    • Keyword Discovery and WordTracker are tools that can help you in keyword/phrase list creation.

Specific Strategic Elements (not provided in any order of priority):

Titles  (or <title> tag)

There is universal agreement among SEO experts that titles are perhaps the most significant variable in the search engine optimization hierarchy.  Your most prime keyword or key phrase should be included in your page/article’s title.

  • Titles generally appear as the blue link on most search engine result pages.
  • Take care in creating your page titles.  You have limited space (approximately 60 to 65 characters) in which to totally identify what your page/article is about.
    • Each page should have a unique title.  Avoid duplicating titles.  You can be red flagged by the search engines, and you loose a chance to enhance you ranking chances (as noted above).
    • Place your keywords and key phrases at the front of your title when possible.  It helps clarify what your page is all about, and what searchers are looking for.
  • Spiders use this element to determine your web page topic.

Use Keywords in Headers and sub-headers

  • Headers and sub-headers are the titles that appear in the body of your article’s content.  These are paragraph  titles used to identify or summarize its gist.  They are usually larger and bolder than the normal script, and may be in a different color.
  • Header titles should make use of keywords that reflect the title of the page.
  • Don’t duplicate them from header to header.
    • Duplication can be seen as SPAM by the spiders.
    • Variations of the title can help in being exposed to a broader audience.

Meta Description

There are some search engines that provide the Meta Description below the title text in the Search Engine Results (SERPs) — the page where searchers see their search results.  With this in mind it could help to be have keywords with your meta description.

  • Utilize keywords and phrases to describe the landing page subject matter.
  • Add the Meta Description to your source code.
  • Space could be limited–so be brief–but to the point.
  • Like the title and headers, meta descriptions should not be duplicated, but should be unique to the page or article.

Links (Intra-Site)

Many search engines give additional consideration to words used in intra-site links (links from one page to another page on the same website).

  • Make the most of links using keywords like, “Mountain Spring Water,” or “New England in Autumn.”
  • Avoid “learn how,” “learn more,” “click here,” etc.

Meta-Keywords

Search engines tend to give little or no consideration to meta-keywords.  That doesn’t mean you can’t use them, and they could give you that little edge you need when a ranking determination is being made.

Domain Name

Where possible, you should include keywords in your domain name.  Length is one factor you have to consider when constructing your webpage’s domain name.  Keywords within the domain give you a leg-up on your competitors.

Alphabetical Priority

While many search engines give little attention to alphabetical priority or order, there are still some that do.  How much concern and effort you want to engage in considering or implementing this facet is up to you.

Other strategic keyword placement locations:

  • Anchor text
  • Page Name
  • 404 Pages
  • Navigational Structure
  • Alt Text
  • Site Maps

Summation/Conclusion

Using specific targeted keywords through out your page is fundamental for page ranking.  Anything that can give you the edge over your competitors that is legal and moral should be implemented.  Remember you don’t want to over do your keywords and key phrases, but you must have enough of them, and have them placed in strategic appropriate places within your pages/articles.  If you follow these suggestions, you will increase your ranking and search success for web browsers looking for what you have to offer.

Why Keywords Are Important

Keywords are the primary element used by search engines to rank pages and articles.  Not only are keywords extremely important, but their strategic placement within your articles and pages is vital.  Ignoring these two important dynamics can keep you from obtaining the page ranking you need and are working for.

Keyword selection is very important.  Choosing the right or appropriate keywords  is fundamental to your seach engine optimization. Keywords are how internet users search the web to find your website’s articles and pages.

Using the right keywords is essential for your website.  Unless your are well established and have a huge following who have already bookmarked your site, and visit frequently, you’ll need to rely on visitor traffic being directed to you by seach engines.

Keywords

Keywords are used to focus attention on the primary and secondary central points within your articles and pages.  These key words are relevant in assisting searchers to find your published information they have an interest in.

You need to evaluate your business to ascertain what keywords individuals might insert into an internet search that could bring them to your website, or a particular page within your site.  This becomes your chief concern.  It sounds simple, but can require some serious evaluation.

To help in this important process you may want think about these elements in selecting appropriate and suitable keywords:

  • Evalutate Your Business Objective

Look at your business to evaluate what it’s about.  Which words best describe what your business does or sells.  Consider who uses the products or services you offer.  Contemplate who could benefit from your products and services.

  • Use Keyword Variations

Web users or browsers don’t always use the same words you use. With this in mind you want to include variations on the specific keywords you select to use.   Include plural words, misspelled words and capitalization.  Examples: Bike, bikes, bicyles, bysicle, etc.

  • Shun Common Words or “stop words

  • “Stop words” are common words filtered by the search engines.  In SEO these words are not considered.  The elimination in considering these words helps search engines in their searches.

In addition to stop words, there are some characters and symbols that are not considered:

    Apostrophe ( ‘ )
    Underscore ( _ )

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Helps

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) should be one of the principal directors of your website page’s construction.  As you compose your web pages you need to consider how the search engine’s spiders and web crawlers will view your page(s).  You are working to have your page(s) be listed on the first page and be number one.  If you’re not number one on the search page, then you at least want to be on the first page listed.

Don’t forget, too, you want searchers to find you easily.  You want to use titles, words and phrases that an average person would use when looking for your website’s article(s).

SEO Fundamentals:

Follow these simple guidelines to help you optimize your articles in being SEO ready and responsive.  Search engines have “standards” or “values” they follow when indexing pages.  You need to ensure each of your articles meet those standards in order to obtain a high ranking.

The search engines constantly change what they looking for–what they will accept for ranking web pages.  Given this expectation and reality, it can be difficult to construct the perfect SEO page.  At a minimum, what you can do is draft content rich and well written articles . . . keeping in mind basic principals of maximizing your search engine optimization.

Page Title:

  • Every page or article should have a title.
  • The title should be brief, but succinct.
  • Keywords should be used where possible, but without altering or twisting the rightful point of the title.
  • Short or brief titles are most effective, but you need to be as detailed as necessary to properly identify your page’s focus.

Metatags:

  • The use of metatags help spiders know what your page or article is all about.  Anything that helps the spiders find and rank you has to be good.
  • Use both the meta “description” and meta “keywords” tags with every article or page.

Heading Tags:

  • Like Meta tags, the inclusion of Heading Tags :
    • <h1>

      • Heading 1

    • <h2>
      • Heading 2

    • <h3>
      • Heading 3

help spiders better identifying the subject of your page or article.

  • Use the<h1> tag only once per article where possible.  Using more than one can be confussing to the spiders.
  • Use (<h2>, <h3>, etc.) as needed to provide differentiation and collobaration to the main focus or theme of your page or article.  This is helpful because some search engines utilize the text information within the heading with greater weight.
    • Keywords can and should be used in the headings.  Prime keywords should be incorporated in the <h1> tag.

Page Text:

  • The most significant effort you can make in the SEO process is to provide rich well written articles filled with relevant information centered around your website and page theme or focus.
  • This is where you can further insert your key words and phrases to help spiders ascertain what your page or article is about.
  • While you have much more room to entreat your article with key words and phrases, you need to use moderation and discreation.
    • Don’t over load your pages with key words.  There is where ”a little goes a long ways.”
    • Key phrases and words should be blended into the fabric of your article in a natural unpretentious way.  They should standout as being “forced” into the page.

The prime purpose of injecting key words and phrases on your page(s) is to provide easy means for individuals and spiders find you in the “search.”  Think about what you would enter in a search to find your item–that’s what others may likely do too.

Keep it simple, but straight forward, and your pages should rank well.
