Web Spiders Are Your Friends

Ever wonder how your web pages get indexed on the Internet?  Enter search engine spiders!  These are good spiders.  Spiders are actually software programs that race about the Internet at breakneck speeds.  They dash around looking for page addresses to retrieve, index and place in their search engine’s databases.

Keywords are one of the essential pieces of data they search for.  From the keywords and phrases the spiders are able to determine what the page or article is all about.  That is why keywords are often referred to as “spider food.”

One of the principal functions these spiders have is to read each article or page in their database.  They then make some assessment as to what the article’s major topic is.  The spiders use a mathematical calculation called an algorithm (a precise rule [or set of rules} specifying how to solve some problem).  Because the spider can only assign it some numerical value, it can be duped into retrieving some odd responses.  This is one of the reasons for keeping article content relevant to your website and pages theme or focus.

The retrieval, scoring and indexing of each page takes a nano-second.  Your score or “ranking” is based on what it finds in your article.  If you have strategically placed appropriate “spider food” within your pages you will be properly ranked–hopefully in the top 20 of searches.

You need to follow good keyword/key phrase placement practice or you can be given less than valued assessment by the spiders.  Using too many diverse keywords in your articles and you can be punished with a low ranking.  The spider can also be overwhelmed and confused–again not a good thing that can result in a lower ranking.

Like Goldilocks, you want to have just the right amount of keywords to maximize your search ranking potential.
