Selecting the Right Affiliate Industry
Key Concerns in Selecting an Industry Group
Selecting an industry is a fairly easy process, but a very important one. Don’t get caught up in worrying about “picking the right one,” or “the highest paying one,” etc.
Your goal or website focus is to direct visitors to the affiliate merchants you have selected. They have the ultimate responsibility to “make the sale.” You are acting as a facilitator to get potential customers to your selected merchants. Your website should create enough interest to encourage visitors to your site to visit the sites of your merchants.
You’re not limited to just one industry. In fact, we hope you select many, and build websites for each following these simple guidelines:
Read all of the guidelines before you take action!
-
There must be affiliate programs in your industry group selection.
No matter what industry or business category you choose, there has to be pertinent and relevant merchants you can affiliate with. These affiliate relationships are how you make your website profitable.
-
A “keyword list” is critical.
Creating a keyword/key phrase list is essential to your success. These words and phrases are the precise phrases or words people enter into search engines. Consider your own web search efforts . . . type in a word or phrase that describes what your searching for and you get plenty of responses to consider–in a nano second too. A group of from 50-300 keywords should do the trick.

Merchant’s websites must communicate appropriately their products to their target market.
There is an advertising term called “creative.” This term suggests that a website should correctly and relevantly communicate to its target market. Our concern is focused on our own site, but especially to our merchant’s website. When you go to a merchant’s website, does it impress you? Are you encouraged to want to buy from them. Your answers should give you some direction to follow as you review your website, and evaluate the website of your merchants. If these websites don’t arouse some sense to take some positive action, then there is work yet to be done. You want visitor to “convert” to customers. You want your merchants to have the best possible “creative” they can muster. Anything short of that goal doesn’t make you as much money.
-
Getting paid. Are the merchants’ payment program generous and fair?
The payment of commissions will vary from industry to industry. There are those that pay a percentage; some will pay a flat fee. There are single tier payments, and some that pay for two-tiers (you – the 1st tier for direct customers; where customers you’ve referred refer other customers – the 2nd tier); There are payers for inquiries and/or registrations. “Affiliate Marketing Primer” addresses these payment options in greater detail.

You don’t have to know the subject.
Knowing the subject helps, but is not critical to your selecting the right industry group to work in. You can get all the information you need to create and publish well written articles for your website right from the internet. Your task will be to write articles, using your keyword/key phrase list. You want to produce one well written per keyword/key phrase from your list. Each of these content rich articles should be from 150 to 300 words in length. You say you’re not a writer! No worry read a few articles on the internet and you’ll get the knack for how easy it can be. You’re not writing a novel. Just state the facts simply, and direct your visitors to your merchants–the should take care of the rest.
Follow this simple directions, and you will be well on your way to creating profitable websites. We encourage you to have more than one website. If one works well, several will make you even more money.
