Starting an Internet Buiness at Home

What Does It Take to Start an Internet/Web Business at Home?

In today’s world of technologyincluding the world wide web–the explosion of home based businesses is mind boggling.  The opportunities seem endless.  Many people are ready and willing to shed their 9 to 5 “jobs” for the rewards of working at home for themselves.  The internet has opened that door for many of us.  Retirees, “baby boomers” and just about any other group of potential at home worker has jumped on the band wagon.  Many have built their home business to earn substantial incomes.

We don’t promise riches or success in any of our articles or offerings.  What we do present is some sound advice to help you in your quest for income and personal satisfaction being employed for yourself at home!

This article is more an introduction, to get your mind thinking in the right direction, than a full tutorial of what it takes.  This website has plenty of articles to help you along the way, and we add to them continually.  What we hope is you get your entrepreneurial spirit awakened.  Hopefully, you will recognize you too can be a part of this ever growing business opportunity.

The following steps should help you in evaluating where you are, and to some degree what you need to do to begin making your own at home internet business a reality:

If you are currently employed we highly recommend you DO NOT terminate your employment to embark on your internet business venture.  The decision to do so will come later–when your business is providing you with a replacement income . . . otherwise you may find yourself “pounding the pavement” looking for another 9 to 5′er.

Research Is First

Roll-up Your Shirt Sleeves, Fire-up Your Computer and Get Started

Don’t try to rush this important part, or any others for that matter. Doing it right the first time saves a lot of grief and pain later on.  Put the information you gather down on paper.  Try to be as organized as you can be.  When you need to come back to review or refresh you mind on something you’ll have it quickly at your fingertip.  Use a binder with tabs.  Mark your tabs accordingly.  Use sub-tabs to help keep things clear and easily accessible if you need to.

  • Assess Your Own Talents, Education, Interests and Ideas

Too many individuals overlook this powerful tool (yourself) when trying to put together an internet business.  Find a quiet and restful area where you’ll have few distractions.  Write down what you feel your talents are.  There are no special talents you have to have.  You’re trying to see what may inspire you most . . . usually it’s something we already do, know or have a great interest in.  Write down anything that comes to mind.  This doesn’t mean you are necessarily going to move in that direction–but don’t be surprised if you do, or at least you use some aspect of the idea.

  • Assess What Resources Do You Already Have

In this instance “resources” are both tangible and intangible. Consider things like: do you have a computer; a printer; internet service; dedicated space to work in–uninterrupted, to name a few.  If you don’t have these items, can you get them?  Do you have sufficient cash to cover the overhead expenses of your business–as little as they may be?  You will have some overhead: purchasing any of the resources noted above you don’t already own; cost of purchasing a domain name; monthly internet service charge, expense to purchase materials or products to sell,  etc.

  • Assess Your Personal Temperament

Do you have the temperament to be involved in a home based business? List your strengths and weaknesses. Hard work ethic (only you will “push” yourself), discipline and patience are three very strong attributes you need. Don’t be disheartened if you find your strengths lacking. You can work at making some weaknesses your strength, but it will be work.

Decide if You Will Be Marketing A Product or Service

You will be doing one or the other, or maybe both.

What you are going to market (earn money by selling) on the internet will either be a product or a service of some sort. The decision of which may hinge on your thoroughly completing the first step of research. Once you have your list you must begin filtering out those ideas you are less comfortable with. Continue this process until you get to just one idea (product or service).  Don’t just pick a prospective business because you hear it will make you a ton of money.  If you’re not happy and committed to what you will be doing it won’t be the success you want it to be.

Begin Learning About The Business You Have Selected

You want to learn as much as you can about your specific internet business selection and about your competitors.

You may have selected a business you already know something about.  Great!  That doesn’t mean you know everything there is to know about it, how to market it, and what your competition is doing.  You will be well served to get back into your quiet area and continue your research–although more dedicated– towards the business you’ve selected.  You want to garner the information you need to get your web business going.  This website is filled with a number of good articles to help you acquire some of the know how you need to begin your business venture.  Check the Alpha Index to select articles of interest to you.  There are plenty of other worthy websites for you to check too.  Get going!

There Is No “Right Time” To Start Your Business

The best time to start your internet business is when you are ready.  Others have already begun, all at different times,  as you’ve already seen in your research.

There are people who think there is a “right time” to start a business.  The right time is when you’re ready.  Being ready is when you feel armed enough from your research that you have sufficient knowledge and understanding of what it takes, and the resources available to make it happen.  So, if you have the needed capital and a good business plan, you’re ready!

Don’t Try To Do It All At Once

Try to pace yourself.  “Rome wasn’t built in a day.”  Building a business is a process–not a happening!

Too many new businesses try to “make a killing” all at once.  If you are expecting instant success–good luck.  If you do succeed quickly, and we hope you do, you’d be the exception.  Most successful businesses take time to grow and mature.  They learn many thing from the “school of hard knocks” along the way.  Things just never seem to go the way we plan or hope.  Staying with your game plan, over time, will reward you in the end.

Use The Experience and Help From Others

Don’t try to “reinvent the wheel” as you get started.  There are great resources at your disposal.  We recommend you use them.  Many are “free,” some are not. Build a team of trusted advisers to help you . . . friends you have now, and those you acquire along the way–even via the internet and through associations and organizations you may join.

There are a myriad of resources at your finger tips to help you along your path to internet business success.  If you don’t use them–shame on you.  Yes, you may have to pay for some of them, but you will  most likely find it money well spent.  Using the knowledge and lessons learned experience of others only means you shouldn’t have to make the same mistakes.  Many a business has “crashed and burned” from the folly of not listening to good counsel and help.  Teams win because of the support and help of all the members, not just one.  Rely heavily on your pool of trusted advisers, and you will succeed.
