My Story – About Making Money on the Web!
My first effort at making money using the web started out, like many others, simply using eBay to sell some items I had lying around the house. With a little help from others, I placed my first item on eBay expecting little. The item, a beehive mold from Martha Stewart, ended up fetching over $500. Not bad for a first time eBayer. Don’t let that “beginner’s luck” sway you into thinking every sale is a bonanza. Don’t get me wrong, I was happy to have the sale, and at the price it sold at. Many more items listed made much smaller profits, but profits nonetheless.
For many, eBay is the answer to their needs. I’ll talk about eBay in a separate article or two. I still do some eBay–it’s profitable, but I was encouraged by one of my sons to begin a website for the purpose of earning some extra money. I am getting closer to retirement, and extra money would be a wonderful addition.
I had no special talents or skills in computers or creating a website. What I had to do was learn. The process was doable, but took time and effort on my part. I also had to spend a few dollars to make it all happen. Since my humble beginnings several things have transpired. I have learned a lot and have discovered some tools to help me along. Some of these I learned on my own, while others I have had others share with me–including friends and family.
The first thing I had to do was become a little familiar with HTML ( Hyper Text Markup Language). This is the language of the internet. This is what Wikipedia has to say about it:
HTML, an initialism of HyperText Markup Language, is the predominant markup language for Web pages. It provides a means to describe the structure of text-based information in a document — by denoting certain text as links, headings, paragraphs, lists, and so on — and to supplement that text with interactive forms, embedded images, and other objects. HTML is written in the form of tags, surrounded by angle brackets. HTML can also describe, to some degree, the appearance and semantics of a document, and can include embedded scripting language code (such as JavaScript) which can affect the behavior of Web browsers and other HTML processors.
You will find that the web will be your best friend. There is more information than you can imagine–or maybe you already know that.
I read a few articles to help me with my education.I selected a domain name and registered it. Then I had to find a web host in order to put my site out to the “world.” Again, some help was given by family and friends.
I then needed a “Page” to publish. I purchased a down loadable “how to build a website” package. This tutorial took me step by step through the process of constructing a website, one page at a time. Basically you need one page (your template page) and you can duplicate the page and add what ever information you want on that page. This self taught tutorial was beneficial to my learning progress.
I then purchased a template to accomplish this task, and give it a more “professional” look. With the template downloaded, I began adding content pages. I tried adding one every day or two for awhile. There were times my schedule wouldn’t allow, but I added them as best I could.
Having pages on the internet doesn’t make you any money. You have to “monetize” your site, as they say. My to primary focuses were to use Google Ads and become an Affiliate with sellers of goods and services that were applicable to my website theme.
Since my humble beginning, I have earned a some money and learned a lot. I have changed my website from my original “self taught” web page format, to my purchased template to what I am currently using: Word Press. (A free content management software program.)
I have added more websites since my first effort.
If this sounds too hooky, I’m sorry. This is how I got started.
Those who of you who have a greater knowledge of computers and their languages and systems will be much further down the road than I was, but you have to start from somewhere, and I STARTED FROM SCRATCH– LITERALLY! You can too.
I have learned there are many ways to earn money on the web. I am willing to share with you what I know.
I had a friend who was considerably older than me give me some wisdom many years ago. I have accepted that wisdom, maybe you can too: “Think how much wiser you’ll be when you are my age if you accept my knowledge and experience, and you add to it your own.”
So, I am on my way to retirement, and having fun doing it.
Do you have some financial goals or needs you’d like to accomplish . . . well you can by putting the internet (web) to work for you too!
I’ll be sharing more details on the “how to” in future articles. Stay tuned. My intention is to show you how a “non-rocket scientist” has done it, and is continuing to do it.
